What are the symptoms of bulimia?

Bulimics are unable to control the impulses that lead them to eat and they feel they can not stop eating. However, guilt and shame after eating many foods leads them to a purge (self-induced vomiting or use of laxatives or diuretics or both), stringent regimes or excessive exercise to counteract the effects of large meals and prevent weight gain.

There are some signs that may indicate that a person has bulimia.
People with bulimia may:

  1. - Fear of weight gain
  2. - Feeling unsatisfied / or the size, shape and weight
  3. - Making excuses to go to the bathroom immediately after eating
  4. - Eat only diet or low-fat foods (except binges)
  5. - Acquire laxatives, diuretics or enemas regularly
  6. - Spend most of the time doing exercise or trying to burn calories
  7. - Withdrawing socially, especially to avoid meals or celebrations where food is served.

What is bulimia?

In the case of bulimia, the sufferer big binge eating occurs (overeating) and then tries to make up with drastic measures, such as induced vomiting or excessive exercise to prevent weight gain.

Over time, this can be dangerous, physically and emotionally. It can also cause compulsive behaviors (ie behaviors that are difficult to avoid).

A diagnosis of bulimia is when someone resorts to binge eating and purging regularly, at least twice a week for a couple of months. These binges are not comparable situations like going to a party, eat excessive amounts of pizza and the next day decide to go to the gym and eating more healthily.
People with bulimia eat large amounts of food at once (usually junk food) and often do to hide from others. Frequently they eat uncooked foods or still frozen food or take away. They often feel they can not stop eating and only do so when they are too full to continue eating. Most people with bulimia then resort to vomiting, laxatives or excessive exercise.
Although anorexia and bulimia are very similar, anorexics are usually very thin and often have underweight. By contrast, people who are bulimic can have a normal weight or being a little exceeded in their weight.

What is anorexia?

Anorexia is a disorder of eating behavior that suppone weight loss caused by the patient himself and leads to a state of starvation. It is characterized by the fear of gaining weight and a distorted and delusional perception of one's body that makes the patient look fat even if its weight is lower than recommended. Thus begins a progressive decrease in weight by fasting and reduced food intake.

Usually it begins with the elimination of carbohydrates, as there is a false belief that fat. Then rejects the fats, proteins and even fluids, leading to cases of extreme dehydration. These drastic measures will be adding other associated behaviors such as the use of diuretics, laxatives, purging, induced vomiting or excessive exercise. It is important to distinguish anorexia from other very frequent but less severe eating disorders. 80 percent of young people go through stages in which worsens their relationship with food and avoid them, which does not indicate any that are developing the disease.
