Bulimics are unable to control the impulses that lead them to eat and they feel they can not stop eating. However, guilt and shame after eating many foods leads them to a purge (self-induced vomiting or use of laxatives or diuretics or both), stringent regimes or excessive exercise to counteract the effects of large meals and prevent weight gain.
There are some signs that may indicate that a person has bulimia.
People with bulimia may:
- - Fear of weight gain
- - Feeling unsatisfied / or the size, shape and weight
- - Making excuses to go to the bathroom immediately after eating
- - Eat only diet or low-fat foods (except binges)
- - Acquire laxatives, diuretics or enemas regularly
- - Spend most of the time doing exercise or trying to burn calories
- - Withdrawing socially, especially to avoid meals or celebrations where food is served.
